A number of communities along the shores of the Great Lakes have been struggling for months and sometimes years to protect or regain public access to the shoreline. Public access to beaches in small communities has been assumed for centuries, but with the growing development of these communities has come new property owners that want to restrict this access.
In July 2005 the Michigan Supreme Court supported a claim to public walking rights along all of that state’s Great Lakes shoreline (3288 miles on four lakes). Most of these groups are looking for the same type of ruling from the Government of Ontario with respect to the Canadian shoreline of the Great Lakes. |
